Mastercard and Zenith Bank launch Essential Debit Card
Mastercard and Zenith Bank have introduced a payment card targeting underserved Nigerian populations, including low-income individuals previously excluded from formal banking systems. The Essential Debit Card provides both physical and virtual options through branch networks and online channels, offering simplified enrollment procedures and reduced issuance expenses for customers seeking digital transaction capabilities.
Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System figures indicate electronic payment volumes reached 1.08 quadrillion naira, with point-of-sale activity climbing to 19.4 trillion naira, representing substantial annual growth in consumer adoption of cashless platforms. Zenith Bank began distributing the cards through its national infrastructure, becoming among the first major financial institutions implementing the framework designed by the global payments network.
Officials from both organizations emphasized the collaboration’s role in advancing economic participation through affordable security features aligned with daily commerce patterns, supporting broader financial inclusion objectives across the country’s expanding digital economy.
