Developers split as AI rewrites gaming
Video game developers hold mixed views about generative artificial intelligence as major publishers reduce staff to fund technology investments. Microsoft, Amazon, and EA have conducted layoffs while pursuing AI initiatives.
Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai believes the technology helps manage large projects. Metal Gear designer Hideo Kojima wants AI to handle routine tasks while he focuses on creative work. Spanish developer Richard Pillosu, of Epictellers Entertainment, opposes using AI for creative purposes.
DayZ creator Dean Hall compared current AI concerns to reactions against Google and Wikipedia in the early 2000s. His studio, RocketWerkz, avoids AI for ICARUS maps but uses it as a coding assistant for other projects. The team prefers handcrafted experiences with their lead world builder from Bethesda designing environments manually.
Elon Musk’s xAI division plans to release a complete AI-generated game by the end of next year. The announcement comes as the technology advances rapidly across multiple industries.
