Scindia, Sitharaman target digital leap for India
Indian telecommunications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia met with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday to discuss capital spending priorities for three agencies under his oversight. The conversation focused on expanding digital networks, improving connections to remote areas, and updating services at the telecommunications department, the northeastern region development ministry, and the postal service. Scindia said the officials examined ways to distribute resources more effectively to achieve better results.
The minister stated last week that his ministry spent 3,447.71 crore rupees on northeastern projects in the 2024-25 fiscal year, marking a 74.4 percent jump from the prior year. India’s telecommunications industry plans to raise its share of gross domestic product from 12 to 14 percent to 20 percent within the next decade. The nation developed its own fourth-generation mobile technology in 20 months, becoming the fifth country to build such systems independently. India serves 1.2 billion mobile users, representing one-fifth of global subscribers.
