Ex dev says Starfield feels empty
Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda Game Studios developer who departed in late 2021, told FRVR that Starfield lacks the quality of the studio’s Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. Nesmith spent 17 years at Bethesda working on titles such as Skyrim and Fallout 4 before becoming a science fiction author. He said the game’s planets felt repetitive and lacked diverse enemies beyond human opponents, with alien creatures serving a minimal purpose similar to wildlife in Skyrim. The exploration system that defines Bethesda games failed to deliver engaging discoveries and encounters across procedurally generated worlds.
The studio continues developing additional content for Starfield. Bethesda has previewed a story expansion, fresh gameplay mechanics, and space environment updates. Reports suggest this material will arrive with a PlayStation 5 release in 2026.
