FCCPC celebrates court rulings on consumer rights
Nigeria’s consumer protection agency praised two court decisions that awarded damages to customers over service failures. The commission said a Lagos judge ordered Multichoice to pay 5 million naira after disconnecting a subscriber who had made a valid payment, while an Enugu court ruled against Peace Mass Transit’s refund ban and awarded 500,000 naira to a stranded passenger.
Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said the rulings validate the 2018 consumer protection law, which allows buyers to challenge unfair treatment. The commission recovered more than 10 billion naira for consumers across 30 industries between March and August 2025, according to his statement.
The transport company’s policy violated multiple sections of federal law by denying refunds for incomplete trips. Bello asked consumers to report problems through official channels rather than taking matters into their own hands.
