Govt plans measures to support traditional media
India plans to protect traditional broadcasters and publishers from digital competition through policy changes targeting licensing rules and advertising rates, Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. The federal government wants to revise Television Rating Point standards and boost payment levels for state announcements in newspapers and on television networks.
Officials completed initial discussions about the ratings framework and will release a second proposal after reviewing comments from industry participants. The ministry seeks to merge the Press Information Bureau, Central Bureau of Communication and Registrar of Newspapers for India to streamline operations. Authorities aim to reduce barriers that restrict media companies.
The government will deploy a chatbot to verify online videos and other digital material as part of efforts to combat false information. The Press Information Bureau expanded public communication work by creating analysis documents about policy matters. Radio licensing procedures will be simplified under the reform package designed to help established media organizations compete with internet platforms.
