Govt urges green building, smarter planning in new projects
Zimbabwe’s Local Government Ministry urged property developers nationwide to adopt environmentally conscious building methods and neighborhood-sensitive project designs. Dr Shingirayi Mushamba addressed industry representatives at a Harare conference, emphasizing that new construction must respect existing community character while incorporating green technologies.
Ministry officials require upcoming developments to include solar power systems, sustainable building materials, and water conservation features. Projects should also avoid straining public utilities by providing independent infrastructure or contributing to municipal upgrades. This policy forms part of the country’s National Development Strategy targeting sustainable urban expansion through 2030.
Industry observers note that such requirements align Zimbabwe with international environmental standards while controlling long-term infrastructure costs. The guidance comes as cities experience rapid population growth, requiring careful planning to balance economic development with resource preservation and community well-being.
