Director Guillermo del Toro expressed interest in adapting The Phantom of the Opera for film after completing his latest project, Frankenstein. Del Toro told Inverse magazine he would approach the classic tale differently from previous versions as he developed ideas for crime and stop-motion projects.
The filmmaker stated he wants to reinvent his directorial approach as he moves forward in his career. Del Toro built his reputation through gothic visual design and emotional storytelling in films featuring monsters and dark fairy tales. His work spans practical effects and stop-motion animation, as demonstrated in his adaptation of Pinocchio.
Del Toro described Frankenstein as marking the end of an era for his grand operatic filmmaking style. The director has not revealed specific details about his vision for the adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. Gaston Leroux wrote the original story that has inspired multiple film and stage productions.
