Anambra tops fiscal charts as Soludo cashes in
Anambra State topped a national assessment of fiscal health in 2025 after advancing from its runner-up position the previous year, according to an analysis by BudgIT that evaluated budget management across Nigeria’s 36 states. The organization ranked Lagos, Kwara, Abia, and Edo behind the southeastern state, which demonstrated strength in revenue generation, spending discipline and debt control under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
Christian Aburime, who serves as the governor’s chief press secretary, attributed the achievement to deliberate policy changes that expanded local tax collection and improved transparency. The former central bank chief applied analytical methods and research-backed strategies to restructure state finances while maintaining accountability standards. BudgIT’s framework examined five measures of sustainability that included whether internally generated funds could cover operating costs and how effectively governments allocated resources toward development projects.
The report establishes Anambra as a reference point for regional financial administration and suggests disciplined leadership can produce measurable outcomes in infrastructure, education and medical services. Aburime said the recognition validates an approach centered on efficiency rather than political messaging and challenges other jurisdictions to pursue similar reforms.
