ILO and UNICEF partner to strengthen Nigeria’s social protection systems
The International Labour Organisation and UNICEF launched a partnership to expand social protection programs in Nigeria through the Supporting Sustainable Social Protection Systems initiative. The collaboration targets vulnerable populations and people affected by economic disruptions across the country.
ILO Country Director Vanessa Phala announced the effort at a capacity-building workshop for government officials on Thursday in Abuja. The initiative aligns with national development goals and aims to create trained social protection advocates at the federal and state levels.
The workshop provides technical training for policymakers responsible for designing and monitoring intervention programs. Phala said the agencies seek to promote coordination between ministries working on protection systems.
The project supports the Decent Work Country Programme and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework priorities. Officials expect the partnership to generate sustainable improvements for vulnerable communities through combined resources and expertise.
