IMPALA warns UMG deal threatens music diversity
IMPALA has challenged Universal Music Group’s proposed purchase of Downtown Music Holdings with fresh arguments about cultural harm. The independent music trade organization released an analysis suggesting the $775 million transaction would reduce revenues for smaller labels and limit diverse music releases across Europe. European competition regulators continue examining the deal after escalating their review to a Phase II investigation earlier this year.
Universal Music Group rejected the assertions and called IMPALA’s analysis inaccurate. The company stated its combination of Downtown and Virgin Music would enhance services for independent labels and support cultural variety in Europe. IMPALA Executive Chair Helen Smith warned that allowing the industry leader to expand further could damage the digital market ecosystem. The European Commission suspended its original December deadline while requesting additional information about the acquisition.
