India’s EV charge accelerates as states race ahead
India is advancing toward cleaner transportation through electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, according to a report released on Thursday by the India Energy Storage Alliance. The study shows the nation, ranked as the world’s fourth-largest automobile manufacturer, is experiencing significant change in its transport sector. Government regulations, corporate spending and consumer awareness are driving the shift away from traditional petrol and diesel engines.
Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu lead electric vehicle adoption, representing more than half of national sales. These regions support the transition by backing local manufacturing, expanding charging networks and establishing dedicated mobility zones. The report notes India pursues multiple technologies simultaneously, with battery electric vehicles joined by compressed natural gas, hybrid, flex-fuel and hydrogen options.
New Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards, starting in April 2027, will reward manufacturers that produce zero- and low-emission vehicles. The regulations introduce incentives for battery, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. Debmalya Sen, president of the alliance, said policy measures remain essential for transformation, with states choosing different approaches based on their infrastructure and market conditions.
