Jennifer’s Body sequel in the works with Diablo Cody
Screenwriter Diablo Cody is developing a sequel to Jennifer’s Body, more than 15 years after the original film struggled at the box office. Director Karyn Kusama confirmed the project and said Cody is working on a script that matches the first movie’s chaotic style. The 2009 horror-comedy grossed just $31 million worldwide against a $16 million production budget.
The film has gained cult status over time despite its initial commercial failure. Studios marketed the original movie around star Megan Fox’s appearance rather than its themes about female friendship and exploitation. Actress Amanda Seyfried said she would only participate if Fox returns for the sequel.
Kusama expressed enthusiasm about the project, but has not confirmed whether she will direct. The original film ended with Fox’s character dying and Seyfried’s character gaining supernatural abilities while institutionalized. Horror franchises frequently resurrect deceased characters for sequels.
