HBO’s The Alabama Solution sheds light on prison crisis
Lead editor Page Marsella helped transform hundreds of hours of footage into the HBO documentary The Alabama Solution, which examines conditions inside state correctional facilities. Marsella joined the project in 2022 after directors Charlotte Kaufman and Andrew Jarecki accumulated extensive material over several years of investigation.
The production team eliminated most expert interviews to focus on accounts from incarcerated individuals and materials recorded inside prisons. Marsella said people with direct experience provide the most valuable perspectives on systemic problems. The editor worked to balance three narrative threads while maintaining momentum throughout the feature film.
Marsella cited Barbara Kopple’s Harlan County, USA as inspiration for allowing subjects to speak without added commentary. The filmmaking approach minimized statistics to emphasize personal storytelling. The documentary website provides an investigation database tracking more than 1,300 deaths within Alabama correctional institutions for researchers and policymakers.
