Lagos signs MoUs with firms on waste-to-wealth projects
Lagos State has formalized agreements with three companies to transform waste management practices during the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit held at the Continental Hotel on Victoria Island. Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab announced the partnerships aim to shift from traditional disposal methods toward converting refuse into valuable resources while reducing landfill dependency.
HAK Waste Limited will implement a beverage container recycling system using deposit refunds and extended producer responsibility mechanisms to create a packaging circularity ecosystem. Haggai Logistics Limited plans to construct the state’s first automated tire recycling facility for processing end-of-life tires using environmentally sound technologies. Mondo 4 Africa will convert non-recyclable plastics into sustainable fuel through eco-friendly processes.
Lagos Waste Management Authority Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin emphasized that private sector collaboration is essential for managing the state’s daily waste volume. Officials stressed the importance of residents adopting source separation practices and recognizing waste as a recoverable resource rather than a disposable material.
