Microsoft faces backlash over Gaming Copilot AI screenshot data collection
Microsoft said its Gaming Copilot artificial intelligence captures game screenshots only when players actively use the feature and does not train models with those images. The company responded after users found the tool operating by default on Windows 11 computers last week. The system analyzes gameplay through screenshots to answer player questions about strategy and progress.
The technology mines text and voice conversations to improve performance. Players can disable data collection through Game Bar privacy settings. Microsoft tested the assistant on mobile devices earlier this year before expanding to computers and Xbox applications last month. The feature automatically identifies games and uses player history to provide guidance and links to additional resources.
