Microsoft ships Nvidia AI to UAE, jackpot
Microsoft has secured American government approval to export artificial intelligence processors made by Nvidia to the United Arab Emirates, opening a significant new market for advanced computing hardware. Company president Brad Smith confirmed the development after meeting strict cybersecurity and physical security standards imposed by federal regulators.
The authorization positions Microsoft among the first major cloud service providers capable of delivering high-performance chips to Middle Eastern customers. Smith stated the company earned its license by satisfying stringent government requirements. Microsoft plans to invest $7.9 billion in the UAE between 2026 and 2029, creating substantial opportunities for Nvidia as the chipmaker seeks alternative markets following its inability to sell products in China.
Gulf nations have attracted increased attention from American technology firms since diplomatic visits by President Trump led to partnership agreements with state-backed entities. The Middle East represents a potential revenue source for Nvidia as restrictions continue blocking sales of cutting-edge processors to Chinese buyers. Whether the region can match the scale of lost Chinese business remains uncertain at this early stage.
