Nigeria sails for IMO Council with zero piracy
Nigeria is campaigning for a seat on the International Maritime Organisation Council, highlighting its four-year record without a single piracy incident. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, presented the nation’s case to delegations in London, framing the bid as a reflection of tangible achievements in maritime security. He credited the successful Deep Blue Project and regional cooperation for transforming the Gulf of Guinea from a piracy hotspot into a secure corridor for global shipping.
The minister stated that Nigeria’s policies align with the IMO’s long-term goals, including port efficiency and environmental stewardship. He assured members that the country seeks to strengthen global partnerships and advance safety and security for all seafarers. This improved security profile has already resulted in lower insurance premiums and increased investor confidence, according to maritime analysts. The nation hopes its security record and blue economy reforms will secure the necessary votes for a Category C council position.
