PowerChina, Katar to expand renewables in northern Nigeria
PowerChina/I²-ESS and Katar Communications formalized an agreement to expand renewable energy infrastructure throughout northern Nigeria with particular emphasis on Kano State, during the Nigeria Energy Exhibition and Conference held in Lagos. Global Director Sammi Zhou stated the collaboration will combine her company’s engineering capabilities with the telecommunications firm’s regional distribution network to deliver electricity access in underserved areas while providing after-sales support, technology transfer and training for local engineers through centers established over a decade of operations in the country.
Ambassador Mohammed Salisu Ibrahim, chief executive of Katar Communications, explained his organization selected PowerChina based on international certification standards that align with Rural Electrification Agency requirements, noting joint ventures have already produced a 250-kilowatt installation and mini-grid systems for rural communities. He added that flexible payment arrangements enable customers in Kano State to adopt solar solutions through installment plans supported by technicians trained under PowerChina supervision since the firm entered telecommunications in 2007.
