Samsung teases modular AutoSSD and fast PM9E1 for CES
Samsung previewed two solid-state drives ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show, with one targeting automotive applications through a modular architecture and another offering high-speed storage for compact computing devices. The Detachable AutoSSD separates the controller from NAND memory using the E1.A form factor to enhance thermal management and enable component-level servicing in vehicle systems, while the design principles could influence future consumer products.
The PM9E1 M.2 2242 represents a PCIe 5.0 drive featuring integrated DRAM despite its compact dimensions, delivering read speeds reaching 14.8 gigabytes per second and write performance of 13.4 gigabytes per second through the Presto controller paired with V8 TLC V-NAND technology. Capacities extend to 4 terabytes via double-sided circuit board construction.
The smaller drive could serve handheld gaming systems, including Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go, alongside ultra-thin laptops requiring advanced storage in limited space.
