Spotify tests top tier as TME SVIP surges
Spotify has initiated a pilot program for a new three-tier subscription model, introducing a premium Platinum plan in five markets: India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. This top-tier offering, priced at more than double the cost of the standard plan in these regions, bundles features like lossless audio and exclusive AI-powered tools. The move represents Spotify’s first significant experiment with price segmentation for its premium services.
This strategy mirrors a successful model already deployed by Tencent Music Entertainment in China. TME reported that its similar Super-VIP program, which now exceeds 15 million subscribers, has become a major growth driver. During its recent earnings report, TME leadership highlighted that premium sound quality remains the most popular benefit for these high-value subscribers, alongside exclusive access to live events and artist merchandise.
The company credited its Super-VIP tier for helping increase its average revenue per paying user. TME also noted that organizing large-scale live performances for top artists has significantly boosted subscriber engagement and conversion rates for this premium offering.
