Trump blocks NVIDIA’s Blackwell chips for China
President Trump has blocked Nvidia from selling its most advanced artificial intelligence processors to China, effectively ending the chipmaker’s efforts to re-enter the Beijing market. During an interview with CBS News, Trump stated the United States will not permit other countries to obtain high-end AI chips, specifically naming the Blackwell series as technology that will remain exclusive to America.
The decision comes despite recent progress in U.S.-China trade relations and represents a setback for Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, who has worked to restore access to Chinese customers. Huang previously told reporters that his company’s revenue from China has fallen to zero, and any market access would represent additional income. Before export restrictions took effect, China represented a substantial portion of Nvidia’s sales, with the company losing tens of billions in potential revenue from the region.
Nvidia currently offers only its Hopper H20 chip for the Chinese market, but that product has struggled to gain widespread acceptance. Chinese authorities have also adopted an unfavorable stance toward Nvidia products, creating additional obstacles beyond American export controls.
