Valve quietly polishes Half-Life 3 rumor
Work on Valve’s HLX project, widely believed to be Half-Life 3, appears to be deep in its refinement stage. Recent updates to the Source 2 engine, introduced through the Counter-Strike 2 patch on October 15, indicate a shift toward optimization rather than new feature development. The update added automated resource cleanup, refined sound and liquid simulations, and minor systems likely intended for HLX, such as an expanded damage group setup for non-humanoid enemies and an asynchronous particle system that reacts dynamically to simulated wind.
A newly labeled “science” asset group has drawn community attention, though analyst Tyler McVicker notes this probably signals routine organization, not fresh content. He emphasizes that HLX remains in polishing mode, with no new assets being created—a typical final step that Valve might stretch over years. Still, rumors suggest a trailer could arrive soon, possibly in November, echoing the surprise launch pattern of Half-Life Alyx. While past predictions have missed the mark, signs point to ongoing momentum behind the project, reinforcing that the Half-Life series remains active.
