WHO launches AFRO Geodatabase for health data
The World Health Organization’s African regional office has introduced a new centralized data platform, the AFRO Geodatabase, to improve health-related geospatial governance. This digital repository allows for the storage and management of verified administrative boundaries, health facility locations, and population data. Developed through a collaborative process with member states, the platform ensures data accuracy and ownership while enabling integration with other health sector systems.
Kebba Touray, head of the WHO AFRO GIS Centre, stated that reliable and integrated information is fundamental for effective health planning and emergency response. The system is designed to empower data-driven decisions for programs like polio eradication by facilitating more accurate population-based analysis. Country-level GIS focal points and health ministry data managers are currently being onboarded to routinely update geographic information.
The initiative includes training and maintenance support from the regional GIS Centre, aiming to harmonize baseline data and improve public health information management across the continent. This effort supports the broader goal of leveraging digital technology for better health outcomes.
