SuperTech plant opens in Ondo, Tinubu hails milestone
Nigeria’s first locally based methanol and ammonium bicarbonate manufacturing facility has begun full-scale operations in Ondo state, with President Bola Tinubu recognizing the achievement as significant progress for the nation’s chemical and fertilizer sectors. The Chinese-owned SuperTech Chemical Industry Limited runs the plant at the Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub in Omotosho, Odigbo Local Government Area, which can generate 100,000 metric tons of methanol and 160,000 metric tons of ammonium bicarbonate each year.
On Sunday, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo toured the site with NNPC Ltd officials and other stakeholders, noting the project supports the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to leverage natural gas for industrial development and employment. Ekpo confirmed the federal government plans to help the company expand output to 500,000 metric tons by 2026.
SuperTech Chairman Yang Jijiang reported that the facility had been relocated entirely from China and reached full mechanical completion in March 2025, consistently meeting production targets. Dr. Alexander Ajipe, principal consultant to the industrial hub, praised the development for reducing import dependence.
