Anthropic strikes massive deal with Google Cloud for TPUs
Anthropic has secured a deal with Google Cloud to use up to 1 million TPU chips, representing the largest external adoption of the custom processors. The artificial intelligence company will gain access to more than a gigawatt of capacity under the agreement by next year. Anthropic selected TPUs based on their cost efficiency and the company’s previous experience with the technology since 2023.
The partnership marks a notable shift away from Nvidia hardware, which dominates most major AI infrastructure deployments. Google’s TPU chips have emerged as a competitive alternative to graphics processing units in machine learning applications. The arrangement provides Anthropic with expanded computing resources for research and model development over multiple years. Industry observers view the deal as evidence of growing competition in the AI chip market beyond traditional GPU suppliers.
