China, US to hold trade talks in Malaysia Oct 24–27
China and the United States will convene for trade negotiations in Malaysia next week as both nations attempt to prevent further damage from their ongoing tariff dispute. Vice Premier He Lifeng will guide Chinese representatives from Oct. 24 through 27 to discuss economic matters with American officials, Beijing’s commerce ministry announced on Thursday. The meeting follows threats by President Donald Trump to impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese goods after Beijing restricted exports of rare-earth minerals.
He arranged the face-to-face discussions after speaking with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over the weekend about resolving tensions between the countries. Trump previously suggested canceling his planned encounter with President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering in South Korea later this month. The American leader expressed interest in reaching an agreement that would end the commercial conflict between the world’s two largest economies.
