Cyber scam hubs near Myanmar pose threat to India
India must stay alert to cybercrime operations along the China-Myanmar border that exploit its citizens through online scams, a report warns. The criminal networks in Kayin State and the Wa region use fake job advertisements to trap victims, seize their travel documents and force them into cryptocurrency and romance fraud schemes targeting people across multiple countries.
Myanmar’s military said its forces raided KK Park, a facility linked to financial crimes and human trafficking. Authorities detained more than 2,000 suspects and confiscated 30 Starlink satellite terminals that powered the scam networks. The compound had operated for five years before the assault.
India’s foreign ministry reported rescuing nearly 300 citizens from Southeast Asian fraud centers in March. Another 540 people returned home through Thailand in later operations. Armed groups, corrupt officials and foreign criminal investors have transformed parts of Myanmar into cybercrime strongholds.
China, Myanmar and Thailand have repatriated over 5,400 Chinese suspects from Myawaddy since early 2025. The criminal networks remain deeply entrenched despite enforcement efforts by regional governments.
