DCCI urges reversal of Benapole port restrictions
Bangladesh’s main business chamber asked officials on Monday to reverse restrictions limiting Benapole port operations past 6 p.m. The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the decision threatens trade flows at the nation’s largest land crossing with India.
Customs authorities halted import and export activities after evening hours, leaving trucks with perishable cargo stuck at the border. The port processed 2 million metric tons of imports and 422,000 metric tons of exports in fiscal 2024-25, the chamber noted.
The shortened schedule will harm traders financially and cut government revenue, the group warned. Better coordination between port staff and police can stop smuggling without closing operations early, the chamber argued.
