ECOWAS eyes second submarine cable for West Africa
West African leaders met in Monrovia from Oct. 22 to 24 to review plans for a new underwater telecommunications cable linking Cape Verde, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau. The Economic Community of West African States organized the workshop to strengthen digital networks and expand internet access across the region.
Liberia’s Deputy Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, S. Mohammed Massaley, said the cable would advance digital transformation and reduce connectivity gaps among member nations. The project aims to increase bandwidth capacity while creating backup systems that protect against service failures.
Officials expect the completed cable to lower internet prices and support economic development through improved cross-border communications. The feasibility study approval moves the regional infrastructure project closer to construction.
