FG pushes for self-sufficiency in fish production
Nigeria’s minister of marine economy pushed for increased domestic fish production, while Norway’s ambassador requested tax exemptions on imported stockfish. Adegboyega Oyetola outlined plans to expand aquaculture infrastructure and regulatory systems at a seafood trade seminar on Tuesday at Lagos Continental Hotel.
Norwegian Ambassador Svien Baera asked President Bola Tinubu to eliminate import duties on stockfish heads after cod quotas declined and prices rose. The diplomat said Nigeria ranks among the world’s largest buyers of Norwegian dried fish, which provides affordable protein for millions of consumers.
Oyetola said the government developed fisheries management policies to boost competitive seafood markets and food security. The ministry aims to reduce imports through private investment, the adoption of modern technology, and improved cold storage networks that reduce post-harvest waste.
Norwegian Seafood Council representatives offered training programs for local farmers to meet international export standards. Fisheries consultant Abiodun Cheke said documentation gaps prevent Nigerian products from accessing global markets despite production capacity.
