Ghana commissions 138 Blue Water Guards in Bole-Bamboi
Ghana deployed 138 Blue Water Guards in the Bole-Bamboi District to stop illegal miners from contaminating rivers and streams. Deputy Minister Alhaji Yussif Sulemana led ceremonies on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the Ghana Minerals Commission office in Bole and the Bamboi Community Centre. President John Dramani Mahama created the program to protect water sources from pollution caused by unregulated mining operations known as galamsey.
Recruits from Riverside communities completed four weeks of training in surveillance, environmental protection, and water operations. Sulemana warned workers they would lose permanent positions and benefits if they accepted bribes. Steven Agbo from the Minerals Commission said past miners worked sustainably, but current operators destroyed forests and waterways. District Chief Executive Abdulai Mahamood said the initiative would preserve natural resources and ensure communities maintain access to farming and clean water.
