Govt approves Zimbabwe Global Skills scheme
Zimbabwe has approved the Global Skills Partnership Scheme to protect citizens working abroad. The initiative establishes formal agreements with host countries to ensure Zimbabwean workers receive legal protections and support while contributing to foreign economies. Skills Audit and Development Ministry Permanent Secretary Ambassador Rudo Chitiga announced this on Friday at the Future Workforce Dialogue in Harare.
The scheme addresses situations where workers face unfavorable conditions overseas. It targets traditional markets where Zimbabweans work as medical staff, as well as other sectors that employ citizens abroad. The program ensures workers deploy under government agreements rather than leaving independently for potentially unsafe destinations.
Employers must agree to send workers back to Zimbabwe to train local workers. The country seeks financial returns and skills transfer through knowledge sharing. The Cabinet approved the program to address skills flight affecting institutions like the National Railways of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Health.
Ambassador Chitiga stressed the need for practical skills over theoretical knowledge. The country faces a shortage of skilled artisans due to an overemphasis on academic degrees. She urged a shift toward technical training to meet job market demands and drive national growth.
