Zimbabwe Free Range Poultry marks 10 years
The Zimbabwe Free Range Poultry Association marked its 10th year of operations on Thursday, recognizing achievements in advancing poultry production and strengthening food security across households and the nation. The organization has worked to support sustainable practices in the commercialization and marketing of free-range poultry products. Chief Executive Beauty Jiji said the association has made meaningful contributions to diverse groups such as rural residents, women, retirees and persons with disabilities.
Professor Obert Jiri, permanent secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, described the poultry program as a flagship effort within the government’s Rural Development 8.0 strategy. The presidential initiative provides 10 chicks and 10 chickens per household to enhance genetics and boost production nationwide. The program has helped rural families improve their nutrition and generate income.
Chairman Golden Aaron Shamu noted the association began with modest ambitions to make free-range poultry a staple food. Government backing came through President Mnangagwa’s Presidential Poultry Programme. The celebration concluded with awards recognizing farmers, industry participants and partners, with Zimpapers receiving an honor for comprehensive media coverage.
