GST cuts fuel Uttarakhand’s farms, crafts, and auto hubs
Goods and services tax changes will help Uttarakhand workers, from mountain farmers to craft makers and hotel operators, by lowering costs and boosting sales. The state government reduced rates on local products and services to strengthen jobs in farming, tourism, manufacturing and small business sectors.
Farmers who grow pahari toor dal, red rice and Lakhori chili peppers gained advantages after tax rates dropped from 12 percent to 5 percent. The lower costs make their crops more competitive in organic and specialty food markets across Chamoli, Almora, Tehri, Nainital and Pithoragarh districts.
Tourism businesses employing 80,000 people will benefit as hotel room taxes under 7,500 rupees fell from 12 percent to 5 percent. The reduction affects popular destinations such as Nainital, Mussoorie, Auli, Haridwar, and Rishikesh, where lower prices should attract more visitors to small hotels and guest houses.
Women who knit sweaters, caps, and socks by hand will earn more as their products become cheaper with the tax cut from 12 percent to 5 percent. Basket weavers using hill bamboo received the same rate reduction that officials expect will increase customer demand.
Food processing plants employing 30,000 workers in Rudrapur will gain better profit margins after the tax decrease from 12 percent to 5 percent. The automobile sector, with 50,000 jobs across Pantnagar, Rudrapur, Haridwar, and Kashipur, will see vehicle prices drop as taxes on small cars fell from 28 percent to 18 percent.
