ICEA LION calls for more corporate funding for mental health
ICEA LION Uganda participated in the East African Mental Health Summit 2025 at Mestil Hotel in Kampala on Friday. The gathering brought together government officials, business leaders, and advocates to address regional improvements in mental health services.
George Kananura from ICEA LION Life Assurance spoke about financing corporate mental health. He observed that businesses prioritize green energy projects while mental health receives minimal investment. Public-private partnerships could expand program funding and impact.
Insurance companies increasingly cover mental illness as legitimate healthcare. Kananura explained that coverage helps families cope with the loss of a breadwinner and financial stress. Economic insecurity triggers significant psychological distress among dependents and children.
The firm partnered with Strong Minds Uganda for the summit. ICEA LION seeks insurance models that are accessible to customers beyond the middle class to reach more Ugandans who need mental health support.
