Kingston drops 8TB SSD, gamers balk at price tag
Kingston Technology expanded its FURY Renegade G5 solid-state drive collection with an 8 TB capacity option, marking the largest variant in a product range that earned recognition from PCWorld editors. The Gen 5 NVMe drive combines a PCIe x4 controller with triple-level cell flash memory to deliver sequential transfer rates reaching 14,800 megabytes per second for reads and 14,000 for writes while surpassing 2 million input-output operations each second.
Keith Schimmenti, who manages SSD operations at Kingston, said power users require expanded capacity alongside robust throughput for professional and recreational computing tasks. The complete series extends from 1 terabyte through the new 8 terabyte model, accommodating diverse application scenarios from uncompressed video projects and three-dimensional graphics work to modern gaming installations that frequently demand over 200 gigabytes per title.
Each M.2 2280 form factor drive carries five years of limited warranty protection and complimentary technical assistance. The PCIe 5.0 interface architecture enables sustained bandwidth performance across extended operational periods, positioning these storage devices for demanding workstation environments and advanced gaming systems that benefit from minimized data access latency.
