Lagos promises inclusive Omi Eko project for all
Lagos State Government and Agence Française de Développement have pledged that waterfront communities will participate fully in the newly launched Omi Eko transportation initiative. The €410 million project, backed by the European Union and European Investment Bank, will convert inland waterways into a modern transit network with electric ferries and upgraded jetties.
Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi told residents the development will create employment rather than eliminate existing livelihoods. Officials visited the palace of Oba Afeez Oriyomi Adaran Shittu in Oriade to outline plans for stakeholder engagement and community training programs.
The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion as the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy proceeds. Local communities will receive training to manage the new infrastructure assets handed over to them.
State authorities expect the waterways transformation to stimulate business activity in affected areas. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently launched the project to provide safer and faster water transport across Lagos.
