Lagos upgrades fisheries data for exports
Lagos State is enhancing its fisheries and aquaculture information systems to meet standards established by the Food and Agriculture Organization and European Union, which emphasize standardized data collection for sustainable resource management. Agriculture Commissioner Abisola Olusanya indicated the government collaborates with industry groups including Lagos State Catfish Allied Farmers Association, to maintain consistent records while conducting field verification through monitoring teams that assess fish farming operations across the region.
The state integrates survey findings into a centralized database supporting traceability requirements for international export markets, with officials estimating current accuracy levels between 75 and 80 percent. Olusanya characterized fisheries as fundamental to the state’s economic and cultural identity, noting that traditional leaders govern numerous fishing settlements along waterways throughout the territory that accounts for substantial national aquaculture production.
