Mega Market to expand with new mills and plants
Mutare-based Mega Market plans to add a 450-ton-per-day wheat mill, a 200-ton-per-day maize mill, a noodle production line, and a trailer assembly plant to expand regional operations. Managing director Shiraan Ahmed announced the multimillion-dollar initiatives on Saturday, following President Mnangagwa’s opening of a $23 million flour facility. The consumer goods company contracted 40,992 metric tons of local wheat this season while supporting small bakeries across Zimbabwe with consistent flour supplies. Employment doubled from 500 workers in May 2021 to more than 1,000 direct positions today.
The firm completed phase one of a 4.2-megawatt solar project that generates 1.4 megawatts of clean electricity to reduce grid dependence. Mega Market operates at full capacity with staff drawn from partnerships with Manicaland State University, NUST, Africa University, and the University of Zimbabwe. The manufacturer aims to supply products throughout the SADC region under the Africa Free Trade Agreement framework. Youth comprise over 60 percent of the workforce as the company explores value-added projects in cereals and pasta production.
