OpenAI acquires Sky to boost ChatGPT integration
OpenAI purchased Software Applications Incorporated, the creator of the Sky artificial intelligence assistant for Apple computers. The natural language interface reads screen content and executes commands across multiple applications while operating through a floating window. Users can automate tasks such as summarizing web pages and sending results through messaging programs or build custom shortcuts.
The acquisition brings deep operating system integration to ChatGPT as all Sky team members transfer to OpenAI. The development team previously created Workflow, which Apple acquired in 2017 and converted into Shortcuts. Sky surpasses Apple’s Intelligence capabilities despite the company’s efforts to introduce contextual awareness features.
Apple faces setbacks after engineer Ke Yang departed for Meta Platforms weeks after leading its information systems division. Internal concerns persist about the redesigned Siri assistant scheduled for spring 2026 release with iOS 26.4. OpenAI executive Nick Turley said the deal advances plans to embed artificial intelligence within everyday software tools.
