NUPRC targets 2.5m bpd as output climbs to 1.83m bpd
Nigerian authorities are targeting crude output of 2.5 million barrels daily by reactivating idle oil fields and accelerating regulatory processes, while current unreconciled volumes average between 1.7 million and 1.83 million barrels, according to upstream petroleum regulatory commission chief executive Gbenga Komolafe. The regulator has authorized 37 evacuation routes and intensified cooperation with security forces to reduce theft while enforcing domestic supply requirements for refineries.
Gas-centered transition initiatives aim to eliminate routine flaring and cut methane releases by 60 percent through commercialization programs and compressed natural gas infrastructure supporting both exports and local consumption. The commission designed a decarbonization framework incorporating emissions monitoring and carbon capture systems to enable climate finance access through trading mechanisms.
Energy correspondents association chairman John Ofikhenua noted the petroleum industry legislation represents two decades of stakeholder advocacy, with the petroleum minister acknowledging the framework has transformed governance and fiscal structures across hydrocarbon operations.
