OpenAI readies Jony Ive iPhone killer
OpenAI and Microsoft revised their partnership agreement to exclude the artificial intelligence company’s consumer hardware from the software giant’s intellectual property rights. The change allows OpenAI to develop devices without Microsoft oversight, advancing its collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive on a pocket-sized AI product intended to replace smartphones.
The renegotiated deal permits OpenAI to pursue an initial public offering while maintaining revenue sharing with Microsoft until an independent expert panel confirms achievement of artificial general intelligence. OpenAI is committed to purchasing 250 billion dollars in Azure cloud services and has hired approximately 24 Apple employees for the hardware project.
The planned device will operate without a screen and use cameras plus microphones for environmental awareness. The gadget will run AI models directly on the hardware with cloud backup for demanding tasks and communicate with other units, similar to current mobile phones.
