Railways to run 7,800 extra trains for Diwali, Chhath
Indian Railways will add approximately 7,800 special trains to accommodate travelers celebrating Diwali and Chhath festivals as authorities establish command centers to track passenger flow. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected New Delhi Railway Station and assessed preparations after reviewing operations from the Rail Bhawan coordination hub. Officials monitor congestion and handle complaints through more than 80 centers operating across the board, zone, and division levels nationwide.
The network carries roughly 425,000 passengers daily from Delhi, while stations in Surat, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru receive continuous oversight. Railways deployed 12,011 special services this season compared with 7,724 trains last year as demand surged. Between Oct. 1 and 20, extra trains served more than 10 million riders while Delhi area stations processed 2.1 million people from Oct. 16 through 20, exceeding last year’s 1.97 million by 133,000 passengers.
Vadodara division transported over 3 million travelers to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal since October began through regular and special routes. Jaipur station sells tickets directly in waiting areas through mobile systems while mini control rooms coordinate passenger services at major terminals.
