Samsung bends reality with TriFold beast
Samsung presented its Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone on Tuesday, showcasing a device that unfolds to nearly 10 inches and measures 12 to 15 millimeters thick when folded. The company showcased the triple-folding phone behind glass at the K-Tech Showcase on October 28 in Gyeongju, South Korea, held alongside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.
The device’s slim profile suggests Samsung may have adopted silicon-carbon battery technology, matching the 12.8-millimeter thickness of Huawei’s Mate XT, which uses the same batteries. Silicon-carbon anodes store 10 times more lithium ions than conventional batteries while maintaining reduced dimensions through reinforcement with carbon nanomaterials.
Samsung designed the TriFold with a U-shaped folding mechanism that keeps the outer display separate from the inner screen when opened, differing from Huawei’s approach. Reports indicate the phone will feature three batteries totaling over 5,000 milliampere-hours, a 200-megapixel camera with 100x zoom, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, and titanium construction.
The manufacturer plans to launch the Galaxy Z TriFold before year’s end, according to industry sources.
