SheTrades links Nigerian women to UK market
A trade mission in Abuja is working to strengthen the role of women in global commerce by connecting Nigerian entrepreneurs with United Kingdom importers. The International Trade Centre and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council organized the event, which introduced 30 women-led businesses to 12 UK buyers. The initiative, supported by the UK-funded SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme, aims to unlock an estimated 32 million dollars in export potential within the agrifood and beauty sectors.
British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever stated the UK is dedicated to helping Nigerian women access international markets, noting that over 300,000 dollars in sales have already been generated through related efforts. NEPC Executive Director Nonye Ayeni emphasized that women are central to expanding Nigeria’s non-oil exports, praising their resilience and determination.
The mission builds upon previous engagements that have successfully generated new sales. The SheTrades programme has also provided export readiness training to more than 1,000 Nigerian women entrepreneurs, supporting their ability to compete in international markets.
