South Africa launches digital skills program for youth
South Africa introduced a workforce development program targeting young people who lack formal employment or schooling opportunities. The Digital Skills for Jobs and Income initiative trains participants in artificial intelligence literacy, cybersecurity, data analysis, software engineering, cloud infrastructure and multimedia production to address labor market demands in technology sectors.
Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development commissioned the effort, which GIZ executes alongside South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions deliver instruction to youth not engaged in education or work, women and people with disabilities. Microsoft Elevate finances the program by supplying learning materials, AI applications and examination credentials at no cost to learners who complete coursework, score at least 80 percent on practice assessments and request certification vouchers. Available qualifications span Azure foundations through advanced engineering specializations.
The partnership between government agencies, educational facilities and technology companies aims to reduce skills shortages while expanding economic participation. Program organizers stated the training prepares South Africans for roles in an economy increasingly dependent on digital platforms and automation technologies.
