Warri-Itakpe rail derails again, NRC blasted
Nigeria’s railway authority has halted all train service along the Warri-Itakpe line following a derailment that displaced two passenger cars late on Saturday evening near Agbor in Delta State. The Nigerian Railway Corporation reported that the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. and may have resulted from deliberate damage to the tracks.
Managing Director Kayode Opeifa stated that all travelers aboard the seven-car train were moved to safety at Agbor without any reported injuries or deaths. Recovery crews, accompanied by security forces, have been working at the location since the accident occurred. Service along this route had only restarted on Tuesday after being closed for multiple weeks.
The railway operator announced that operations will remain suspended while officials complete a thorough examination of track conditions and associated infrastructure throughout the corridor. The corporation expressed regret for disruptions to travelers and said regular service would return once safety inspections confirm the line can operate without risk. Officials are investigating whether vandalism caused the derailment at the 212-kilometer marker.
