Wayve tests Level 4 robotaxis in London
The autonomous vehicle company Wayve has initiated testing of its Level 4 robotaxis on the complex streets of London, with commercial deployment targeted for 2026. The startup employs an end-to-end neural network, an artificial intelligence system designed to learn driving through experience and adapt to unpredictable urban environments. This contrasts with the detailed pre-mapping strategy used by competitors like Waymo.
Wayve’s test vehicles demonstrated the ability to navigate numerous obstacles, including pedestrians and cyclists, with a cautious and fluid driving style. The company, which has secured significant funding from investors including Microsoft and Nvidia, is positioning its adaptable AI as a solution for cities with challenging, non-grid layouts. This development coincides with the United Kingdom government fast-tracking its autonomous vehicle pilot program.
