Airtel Money launches cloud-native platform across Africa
Airtel Money has deployed a cloud-native mobile money system developed by Comviva across markets operated by Airtel Africa, beginning with Kenya, before expanding to additional territories throughout the next 12 months. The platform serves 49.8 million customers through more than 50 features and 120 application programming interfaces, enabling accelerated partner integration and fintech service expansion.
Ian Ferrao, chief executive of Airtel Money, characterized the implementation as a foundational shift supporting financial inclusion objectives and business growth opportunities throughout the continent. The architecture incorporates federated identity protocols and multi-factor authentication alongside self-service tools and cross-border transfer capabilities. Rajesh Chandiramani, chief executive of Comviva, stated the deployment combines intelligent automation with security measures designed to facilitate digital financial access at scale while maintaining regulatory compliance standards.
